How Does Therapy Help You Move Through Grief?

Grief doesn’t follow a schedule, and it rarely responds to advice. What it does respond to is being witnessed by someone who won’t rush you, minimize the loss, or try to fix what can’t be fixed.

Grief isn’t an event; it’s a whole landscape you’re suddenly living in. The world keeps moving while you’re trying to figure out how to do anything at all. There is no schedule for this, and anyone who suggests one isn’t paying attention.

Here, your grief is welcome in whatever form it arrives: numb, furious, exhausted, oddly fine on a Tuesday and undone by Thursday. Mariann will make room for all of it.

For 30+ years Mariann has sat with clients through losses of every kind. The work is slow on purpose. What hurts is allowed to hurt, and you won’t do it alone.

Is Grief Therapy Right For You?

There’s no threshold of pain you have to cross to deserve this work. If any of these sound familiar, you’re in the right place.

You've lost someone and the world feels suddenly unfamiliar

You feel a grief you thought was behind you showing up again

You want permission to move slowly and feel everything

Mariann’s practice is open to adults of all genders, sexual orientations, and backgrounds, across the adult lifespan. Whoever you are, you’re welcome here.

What Forms of Grief Does Mariann Work With?

Death of a Family Member

Grieving a parent, spouse, sibling, or child.

Divorce

The end of a marriage is its own kind of loss.

Miscarriage

Loss that's often unseen, but no less real.

Loss of Work

Job loss touches identity, security, and self-worth.

Death of Someone Important to Me

How Do You Grieve the Loss of Someone Who Shaped You?

Losing a parent, partner, sibling, or child rearranges the whole map of your life. There’s no timetable for that, and no version of grief you have to perform to be doing it right.
Losing a parent, partner, sibling, or child rearranges your whole interior world. The loss isn’t just the person, it’s the version of yourself that existed in their presence, the daily rhythms, the inside jokes, the future you’d planned around them.

Whether the death was sudden or you’d been preparing for a long time, the grief that arrives is its own creature. There’s no version of this that’s ‘right.’ Anger lives alongside love. Relief can live alongside heartbreak.

Mariann will go slowly. You’ll get the space to remember them out loud, to be honest about the complicated parts, and to figure out, over time, no rush, what carrying them forward looks like for you.

Divorce

How Do You Rebuild Your Life After Divorce?

Divorce grieves a future you imagined, even when leaving was the right choice. The work is holding all of it, the loss, the logistics, and the identity, without getting stuck in resentment.

Divorce is grief, even when it’s the right thing. You’re not just ending a marriage, you’re letting go of a shared future, an extended family, daily routines, and, often, a piece of who you thought you were.

Mariann will work through the emotional layers and the practical ones: co-parenting under strain, identity outside the relationship, the rollercoaster of anger and tenderness, and the slow reconstruction of a life that’s truly yours.

There’s no script for this. You’ll get a steady person to think alongside, untangle the knots, and rebuild, at your own pace, without bitterness becoming the new normal.

Divorce is grief, logistics, and identity work all at once. If any of these are part of your life right now, this is a place to bring them.

Miscarriage

How Do You Move Through Pregnancy Loss at Your Own Pace?

Pregnancy loss carries a quiet grief the world often rushes you past. Here, your loss is named, witnessed, and held with care, at any stage, and no matter how much time has passed.
Pregnancy loss can be one of the loneliest griefs there is. The world often rushes you forward, ‘at least you can try again,’ ‘it wasn’t meant to be’, when what you need is for someone to simply sit with what happened.
Here, your loss has a name and a place. Mariann will honor what was, whatever stage it was, and however many losses you’ve carried.
Mariann will also make room for what comes with it: the impact on your partnership, the complicated feelings around other people’s pregnancies, the question of whether and how to try again. None of it has to be figured out today.

There’s no timeline, no minimum stage, no version of this loss that isn’t worth taking seriously. If any of these fit, come as you are.

Loss of Work

How Do You Rebuild Identity After Losing Your Work?

Losing work, by layoff, retirement, or career change, touches far more than income. It shifts your routines, your identity, and your sense of what comes next.

Work shapes more than your calendar, it shapes how you answer ‘what do you do,’ how you structure your week, how you measure your own worth. When it ends, by layoff, retirement, or a chapter that simply closed, the loss touches all of that.

Mariann will work through the identity shift, the financial fear, and the strange, untethered feeling of suddenly having more time than purpose. You don’t have to perform optimism here.

From that ground, Mariann can help you ask the bigger question quietly: what do you actually want this next chapter to be?

Is This Work Right for You?

Work loss touches identity as much as it touches income. If any of these describe you, therapy can help you find steadier ground.

What Questions Do Clients Ask?

Is there a 'right' way to grieve?

No. Grief doesn’t move in stages or on a schedule. Some days will feel manageable, others won’t, and both are part of the same process. Her job is to walk beside you at whatever pace your grief actually moves.
Not at all. Grief that gets pushed down often resurfaces years later, sometimes triggered by an anniversary, another loss, or a life transition. Whenever you’re ready to look at it, the work can begin.
Never. This work isn’t about closing the door on someone you love. It’s about learning to carry them with you in a way that lets you keep living your own life.
Any loss that’s shaping your life. Death, divorce, miscarriage, a diagnosis, a job, a friendship, a version of the future you were counting on, all of it belongs here.
Sessions happen by secure video from wherever you are in New York or Arizona, for a standing weekly or biweekly hour. It’s a real conversation, not a webinar, and most clients say it feels more intimate than they expected.
Yes, especially those parts. Relief, anger, guilt, and love often live side by side after a family loss. This is a place where none of that has to be softened.
No. Old losses often reopen when life shifts, a new loss, a milestone, becoming the age they were. Whenever you’re ready, the work can begin.
No. The goal isn’t to close the door on someone who mattered. It’s to find a way to carry them that lets you keep living.
One of the hardest parts of loss is that life keeps asking things of you. Together you’ll work on small, real ways to make room for grief inside a life you still have to live.
Yes. Grief often begins before a death, especially with long illness or decline. That grief is real and deserves its own space.
Both can be true. Divorce is grief even when it’s the right choice, you’re letting go of a shared future, not just a relationship. There’s room for all of it here.
Yes. Co-parenting under strain is one of the most common threads in this work. Mariann will help you build ways to hold your ground without living in reaction.
That fear alone is a good sign. Mariann will help you process the anger so it doesn’t calcify, and rebuild an identity that isn’t defined by what happened.
Yes. Some of the most important work happens before a decision is made. Mariann will slow it down enough that you can hear yourself think.
Then there’s a specific kind of shock and grief to hold. Mariann will help you work through the anger, the self-doubt, and the slow return to your own life on your own terms.
Yes. Loss at any stage is loss. Your grief is not measured in weeks of pregnancy, and it doesn’t need to be justified to anyone, including yourself.
That’s some of the real work. The complicated feelings, avoidance, and guilt around others’ pregnancies are common and can be gently navigated.
Absolutely, at your pace. There’s no timeline you have to meet, and no ‘right’ choice you have to arrive at.
Yes. Pregnancy loss often resurfaces around anniversaries, other pregnancies, or milestones the child would have reached. Old grief is still grief, and it’s welcome here.
Yes. This is one of the most common strains after pregnancy loss. Individual work with you can create real change in how you two navigate it together.
Because it is. Ending a chapter of work, even by choice, means losing routines, identity, and community. Your feelings aren’t a sign you made the wrong call.
You come somewhere you don’t have to perform contentment. Retirement is a major identity shift, and it deserves real space.
Yes. The ‘what’s next’ question rarely gets answered by pushing. It gets answered by making enough room to hear yourself again.
Yes. Shame is often the loudest part of a job loss, and the least talked about. Mariann will take it seriously without letting it define you.
By separating your worth from the pace of the market. Mariann will help you build a rhythm that protects your mental health while you keep moving forward.
